Over centuries ago

Over centuries ago, millions of African people were brought to the Caribbean from Africa by the British. Thousands of men, women and children were captured and taken across the Atlantic Ocean by what was known as the triangular trade. This was to be the beginning of the enslavement of the Africans. After the death of majority of the native population, the British needed a new labor force to cultivate sugar which resulted in them going to West Africa and trading goods such as guns in exchange for Africans to take as slaves. The Africans were chosen because of they were able to better withstand the Caribbean climate, diseases and hard labor. The period of slavery lasted from 1662 and ended in 1807. Approximately millions of slaves were brought here to the Caribbean to several different British owned colonies, Jamaica being one.
