In Mother Tongue by Amy Tan

In Mother Tongue by Amy Tan. She writes, “I think my mother’s English almost had an effect on limiting my possibilities in life”. Tan is trying to say that not only language affects people’s identity, but also the way is distinguish by society. In her writing, She illustrates some life examples on how her mother’s english language takes part in shaping her own personality. The cause of hearing her mother speak limited english at home eventually led her doing poorly in English, rather than her science and math score where she got an excellent grade. Consequently her teachers steered her away from writing and more towards math and science.
